Adjustments are performed to essentially calm the tissues and relieve tension in the area around a joint that may feel irritated. They are a high velocity (fast) and low amplitude (least amount of force possible) technique that can assist in pain relief, but do not move joints into or out of place. The popping sound is the pressure of gases, like oxygen and nitrogen, being released from the fluid in the joint capsule as it stretches during the adjustment.
-
Absolutely not! Some patients find great success with adjustments while others may have conditions like osteoporosis that are a contraindication to spinal manipulation. As a patient you have the final say on what treatment modalities you would like performed. Many of my patients enjoy soft tissue therapy and therapeutic exercise treatments only, and achieve great success!
